Our Story

Serendipity Bookshop is the dream of Donna and her wife, Shannon, two people who believe deeply in the power of books, community, and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome.

Donna, a longtime Taunton resident, has spent more than 27 years building connections in the community she calls home. For as long as she can remember, she dreamed of creating something meaningful, a place where people could gather, slow down, and feel a sense of belonging. Over time, it became clear that books were the perfect way to bring that vision to life.

Shannon shares Donna’s love of stories and community. Together, they opened Serendipity Bookshop as a woman-owned, LGBTQ+-owned independent bookstore in the heart of downtown Taunton. Their goal was simple but powerful: to create a warm, inclusive space where readers of all ages and backgrounds can discover books that inspire, challenge, comfort, and connect.

At Serendipity, every shelf reflects their belief that stories matter. The shop carries thoughtfully curated new and used books across genres, alongside cozy gifts for readers, because they believe bookstores should feel a little magical.

More than anything, Donna and Shannon hope Serendipity becomes a place where people linger, discover something unexpected, and feel at home. Because for them, books aren’t just stories, they’re a way to bring people together. A place where everyone is welcome and every story is told.

Our Philosophy

At Serendipity Bookshop, we believe a bookstore is more than just shelves of books; it’s a place where ideas, stories, and people intersect. Our philosophy is rooted in connection, curiosity, and community.

We curate our collection with care, offering books of every genre and style, from timeless classics to contemporary voices, local authors to global perspectives. We believe that the right book, at the right moment, can inspire, challenge, comfort, or transport, and everyone deserves access to that experience. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, we’re always happy to order it for you.

But books are only part of the story. Serendipity is a community space, designed to foster conversation, creativity, and belonging.

We host book clubs, author signings, poetry readings, and intimate gatherings, bringing people together to share ideas, discover new voices, and celebrate the power of storytelling.
